I paint allegories in a somewhat Expressionistic manner. Sometimes my work may shock, but this is not my intention. I do edit my work, though I try not to edit feeling. I paint for a piece to be felt as well as seen. In the mass amount of imagery found in art today, I want my work to have its own voice. The only honest way to do this is to paint from within. Every color or form I use is intentional. I do not rely upon the accident, though at times it may occur. As you can see from my work, I hold nothing back from the viewer. I want the viewer to feel as if he or she is looking at a family snapshot album. Of course it is a psychological view rather than a realistic one, yet it is a snapshot, nonetheless. When I am in an abstract mode, I still want the viewer to see the psyche behind the work. I know that painting is not in vogue at the moment, and some may refer to it as old school. Having said this, let me say that though I may admire the masters, my style is of my own and my subject matter is of today. Yes, an artist should push the envelope, but there needs to be an envelope to push. Those who went before us provided that. Writing an artist’s statement is like a writer trying to paint his book. Having used that analogy, thank you for reading this. |
